ROLE OF INFECTION CONTROL COMMITTEE

ž  Purpose

This committee bears the responsibility of Infection prevention and control program  with an objective of reducing the risk of HAI in the hospital. The committee discusses and decides on each matter that can have an effect on infection control. It provides a multidisciplinary forum for laying down the infection control policies and procedures and ensures their implementation. The Infection Control Committee is generally comprised of members from a variety of disciplines within the healthcare facility.

Representation may include: Hospital Administrator, Microbiologist, physicians, nursing supervisor, infection control practitioners, Infection control officer, Infection control nurse, quality assurance personnel, risk management personnel as well as representatives from OT, CSSD, ICU, environmental services (support services) etc.

ž  Role and Responsibilities

1.      Develop and approve organization wide infection control programme, policies, activities and manual.

2.      Establish standard precaution practices to be followed across the hospital.

3.      Establish definitions and criteria for identifying and reporting of all infections among patients and personnel.

4.      Guide departments on evidence based infection control practices

5.      Set benchmark HAI rates for monitoring the effectiveness of infection control measures.

6.      Validate methods for calculating HAI rates.

7.      Review HAI rates periodically and recommend actions accordingly.

8.      Develop antibiotic policy in conjunction with pharmaco-therapeutics committee.

9.      Develop protocol for handling of infection outbreak and manage such situations.

10.  Other similar matters related to infection control.

11.  Risk reduction goal and measurable objective are established by the committee at least annually and reviewed monthly.
